Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi(photo) on Saturday exposed a plot by the opposition to topple the Malaysian government, with an Umno-cum-Barisan Nasional (BN) leader allegedly behind it.
He said the plan was to obtain statutory declarations from
the opposition members of Parliament (MPs) and to pull in the support of BN
lawmakers in toppling the government through the "back door".
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the matter was
serious and he had received information on it from reliable sources.
However Zahid Hamidi today has confirmed that Umno deputy president
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin(photo) is not the leader he had referred to as plotting to
topple the government.
Without naming anyone, he said the person responsible was a
senior Barisan Nasional leader, who was quite "elderly" but
"still had a lot of ambition".
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin(photo) however wants the
identity of the Umno leader, who is alleged to be working with opposition MPs
to topple the government, to be exposed.
"We need to know who is the individual, more so as it
involves a person in Umno said to be plotting to topple the government illegally.
"The attempt is linked to a member of Parliament and as
an MP, I also wish to know who is the individual so that precautions could be
taken to stay away from that person," he told reporters after opening the
Bukit Katil Umno division meeting
yesterday.
