A war of words erupted in the Parliment on friday, prompting a large number of opposition parliamentarians to stage a walkout.
This incident occurred when Ibrahim Ali (Independent-Pasir Mas) was debating the royal address.
The parliamentarians were upset with Ibrahim’s attack on the opposition, whom he accused of being hypocrites for not championing the issues which they should champion when in power but criticised the government when not in power.
The temperature rose another notch when the vocal MP uttered the words ‘bangsa asing‘ (foreigners). He said they did not know how to use the proper terms to address the Malay royalty
.
An infuriated N Gobalakrishnan (PKR-Padang Serai) then demanded Ibrahim to retract his statement, saying that it was directed at the non-Malays.
However, Ibrahim refused to budge, claiming that the term ‘bangsa asing‘ referred to those outside the country.
At this
juncture, deputy speaker Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar tried in vain to calm the situation.
The tension intensified when the duo became locked in a verbal dispute which saw some harsh words being exchanged leading to Gobalakrishnan stomping out of the Dewan Rakyat.
Ibrahim later apologised to the deputy speaker and retracted all the ‘improper’ words used but accused Gobalakrishnan of provoking him.
Soon af
ter this, another verbal altercation erupted when Khalid Abdul Samad (PAS-Shah Alam) questioned Ibrahim’s attitude as portraying himself as the only leader championing the royal institution.
Ibrahim, however, refused to allow Khalid to seek an explanation and this prompted the latter to leave the House as well.
Disappointed with the frequent interruptions to his speech, a vexed Ibrahim threw his ‘songkok‘ on the table.
This was followed by a large number o
f opposition MPs leaving the House.
However, the independent MP received support from several BN parliamentarians such as Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) a
nd Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) who expressed appreciation for Ibrahim’s ’stern stance’ in defending the royal institution.
