COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A suspected rebel suicide bomber killed 24 people Monday when she blew herself up among a group of soldiers searching civilians fleeing Sri Lanka's northern war zone, the military said.
The bomber detonated the explosives attached to her body outside a camp for civilians fleeing conflict zone near Visuamadu on Monday. Sixty other people have been injured in the attack.
According to the ministry, the assailant arrived at the camp with other civilians seeking protection and blew herself up before she could be screened.
The bombing was the first major suicide attack in Sri Lanka in more than a month and led to fears the Tamil Tiger separatists boxed in by the military and on the verge of defeat will increasingly turn to guerrilla warfare in their battle against government forces.
The reported attack came shortly after military officials said more than 15,000 civilians have fled the northern war zone over the past three days, as government forces attempt to wipe out the separatist Tigers.
