Bangkok, Thailand – A Thai Buddhist abbot has been charged with the rape of a 16-year-old girl, a report said Thursday.
Phra Wirat, abbot of Khao Leb-nga temple in Nakhon Sawan,
240 kilometres north of Bangkok, was expelled from the monkhood and arrested,
according to the Bangkok Post.
The abbot initially denied the reports but later accepted
police charges after several monks in the temple testified against him.
According to junior monks at the temple, Phra Wirat also
regularly drank alcohol and ordered his subordinates to buy alchohol for him.
The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the monastic
code.
