6.7 EARTHQUAKES ROCK WESTERN MEXICO

MEXICO CITY, Mexico- The quake occurred Saturday evening local time and was centered about 42 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of Iguala in Guerrero, 166 kilometers (103 miles) southwest of Mexico City, the US Geological Service reported.
High-rises swayed in the center of Mexico City, and shoppers were temporarily herded out of some shopping centers.
Mexico City's mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, reported by Twitter that no major damage was yet reported although there were some power failures in parts of the city.
  • Ebrard also stated that helicopters were flying over the metropolitan area in search of damages, adding that efforts are being made to restore power to affected areas.
  • According to local press reports, cellphone service in some areas of the capital went out and some 30 neighborhoods were without electricity. However, local officials reported that life in the major city has returned to normal with the subway system, city buses and the international airport operating normally.
Mexico City is located in an earthquake-prone zone and suffered a disastrous tremor in 1985. Although officials have take measures since then to reinforce buildings, memories of the tragedy remains and even minor quakes causes panic, sending people out on the streets.
