SANTIAGO,Chile - Five people have been killed and more than 25 injured in a major crash near Chile's capital Santiago. Twenty-three lorries, 17 cars and 11 buses were involved in the pile-up which caused traffic to back-up for many miles.
Police say the accident started when one small vehicle stopped suddenly due to lack of visibility in the dense morning fog, which was made worse, witnesses said, by smoke from the burning of nearby fields.
Chilean authorities say that the injured have been taken to hospital but that rescue workers are still pulling out some people from their vehicles.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident which witnesses attributed to heavy morning fog and thick smoke possibly from nearby vineyards burning fires to protect their vines from frost.
