INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PROMISES 'DIKIR BARAT'

NATIONAL NEWS
KUALA TERENGGANU - Scrap rubber dealer from Rantau Panjang, Kelantan , who is offering to contest as an independent candidate in the Jan 17 Kuala Terengganu by-election, Isma Airfath Hassanuddin, is hoping to win the people's votes by keeping them entertained.
He is planning to hold cultural performances, including "dikir barat", and organised motorcades, instead of giving political talks or "ceramah" as other candidates would, in the election campaign.
Isma, 38, who arrived at Taman Batu Buruk here today in a convoy comprising mini cars and volkswagon vans, said his aim was to calm the otherwise tense situation throughout the campaign period.
"There is no need to hold 'ceramah' (talk)...we hold 'dikir barat', stage shows, to get the people's votes," he told reporters here today.
He said if everybody was to campaign in a relaxed manner, it could avoid incidents, including like that of a demonstration which happened at Kuala Ibai in the last general election.
