KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - In the midst of Malaysians celebrating Idul fitri, the manager of an optician’s store in Berjaya Times Square has been hospitalized after being beaten by a group of men he confronted over a pair of sunglasses that was missing from one of the shop’s displays.
- The Star Online reported that the man’s wife, who only wished to be identified as Mrs Lim, said she was nearby, waiting for her 34-year-old husband to finish his shift last night from 9.30pm when the men where in his shop.
- “He was working with another female colleague. The rest of his colleagues were off-duty,” Lim said.
- “The group entered the shop and left after walking around for a while.
- “My husband and his colleague then noticed that a pair of sunglasses were missing from the display section,” she said.
- Lim said the assistant yelled: “pencuri (thief)!” and her husband gave chase.
- According to Lim and another witness nearby, a payroll officer, Carmen, 27, a violent confrontation ensued.
- “He shoved the manager to the ground and the group started assaulting him,” Carmen said.
- “They were kicking him like a football for about a minute. He had no chance of fighting back,” she said.
- She said that other people who witnessed the attack – including a security guard – appeared too afraid to intervene.
- “They walked away after beating him up. Another security guard came over and escorted him into the optical shop after they left.
The manager was sent to Prince Court Medical Centre for
treatment.
Dang Wangi CID chief Depty Supt M. Gunalan confirmed the
incident and that a report had been lodged at the Tun H.S. Lee Police Station.
