One of the three bodies recovered by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency being brought to the Tanjung Pengelih Marina Jetty
PENGERANG (Johor), Malaysia: A fibreglass boat with about 30 people, all believed to be Indonesians trying to slip out of the country illegally, sank in the choppy waters off Pengerang in Johor State.
Authorities have mounted a massive air and sea search and rescue operation.
So far, they have discovered at least six bodies – three women aged between 30 and 40, two boys between two and three-years-old and a seven-year-old girl. This is the second sea tragedy in two weeks in the area. On April 28, six Pakistanis drowned after their vessel capsized.
Johor Marine Police Squad 2 chief Asst Comm Mohd Khamsani Abdul Rahman said yesterday initial investigations showed that boat was headed to Batam from Sg Rengit in Malaysia.
