ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – The U.N. refugee agency says women and children are fleeing the West African state of Ivory Coast's post-election violence by the thousands.
Spokesman Adrian Edwards said Tuesday that some 6,000 people have fled to Liberia while 200 others have gone to Guinea.
UNHCR says emergency supplies are being airlifted to help up to 30,000 people, but that number is only a planning figure.
Over the weekend the U.N. said it had received hundreds of reports of Ivorians being abducted from their homes at night and that 50 people had been killed.
The U.N. says Alassane Ouattara (right photo ) won the presidential election, but Laurent Gbagbo (left photo ) is refusing to concede defeat and step down. Gbagbo ordered U.N. peacekeepers to leave the country but the U.N. has extended their mandate through June.
