ANTI-MUSLIM DEMONSTRATION TURNS VIOLENT


BIRMINGHAM, England- A demonstration by a British nationalist group turned violent Sas members of the English Defense League charged left-wing counter-protesters. The group called the demonstration in Birmingham to protest radical Islam and Muslim fundamentalism.
  • Witnesses said hundreds of people were fighting in the city center, The Daily Telegraph reported. Police arrested 20 men on a bus and at least one more nearby.
  • "There were about 250 people in total, fighting and throwing bottles at each other," one eyewitness said.
  • Before the demonstration began, the English Defense League posted a notice on its Web site predicting a "great day out" and urging everyone to be peaceful. It said the only issues to be raised were those of radical Islam.
  • "We are not a Fascist organization and urge anyone who knows of anybody who is intent on causing trouble on the day to contact us," the group said.
