- Officials within the Israeli army have expressed serious concerns over the escalating number of suicide cases among their soldiers, a report says. The Hebrew daily Ma'ariv has revealed 44 cases of suicide in the army in the last six months, citing fears among senior military officials.
- The report also says a top intelligence official who operated in a number of neighboring countries, including Lebanon, committed suicide in his office last week.
- The suicide rate among Army soldiers reached its highest level in three decades in 2008, military officials said in a report that pointed to the inadequacy of anti-suicide efforts undertaken in recent years.
- An estimated suicide rate of 20.2 per 100,000, a sharp increase from the 2007 rate of 16.8.
- Army officials believe that contributing factors include emotional and psychological stress caused by repeated combat deployments, along with the toll that the tours have taken on marriages.
