US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States will attend multilateral talks with Iran over its nuclear program next week in Germany.
Clinton noted that there is a “clear opportunity for the Iranians” to demonstrate “some willingness to engage meaningfully” with the international community.
"Whether or not that hand becomes less clenched is really up to them. But as we look at the opportunities available to us, we're going to have a very broad survey of what we think we can do," Clinton said in her first press conference.
She noted that President Barack Obama offered Iran “an extended hand of diplomacy" in his interview with the Al-Arabiya satellite television network on Monday.
The five permanent members of the Security Council -- Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States -- plus Germany are negotiating with Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program in exchange for economic and energy incentives.
The State Department's acting spokesman, Robert Wood, said the meeting is planned for next week in Germany on the level of political directors of the State Department and foreign ministries.
