Three Katyusha rockets fell on northern Israel from Lebanon for the second time in a week, striking in open fields, Israeli police said Wednesday, prompting fresh fears the conflict in Gaza could spread across the region.
While security forces continued to search for the impact sites of the rockets, there were no immediate reports of anyone wounded or damage to property.
The army launched a counter strike, firing artillery shells at the assumed location of the Katyusha launchers.
Israel has reportedly fired at least seventeen rockets into southern Lebanon within minutes after being hit by rockets from the country. .
Police say the rockets landed in open areas near the town of Kiryat Shemona on Wednesday and there were no reports of damage or injuries. People in northern Israel were asked to head to bomb shelters.
Lebanon said the Israeli army fired shells on south Lebanon in return.
Israeli helicopter gunships flew reconnaissance missions along the heavily protected border as Lebanese troops and UN peace keepers sent out patrols, the Lebanese officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
In a statement released to the press, former deputy defense minister and current Chairman of the Yisrael Hazaka party Ephraim Sneh said that Israel must consider this attack when deciding on how to proceed with the operation in the South.
Israeli officials have expressed concern that militants in Lebanon could try to open a second front in solidarity with Gaza's Hamas rulers against Israel's 19-day offensive against the militant group.
