ODD-JOB WORKER ARRESTED FOR INSULTING MALAYSIAN PM

An odd-job worker angered by the recent fuel subsidy cut is now in hot water over a photo of him holding a slipper against the face of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on a poster.
M. Krishnan, 58, was arrested by police on Saturday at his low-cost flat in PPR Sri Alam, Sungai Besi, to facilitate investigations.
He was remanded for a day to assist police in their probe into intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal intimidation.
Krishnan has been released on police bail.
Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner R. Munusamy confirmed the incident, saying police were wrapping up their investigations.
"The investigation papers will be passed to the Attorney-General's Chambers this week," he told The Malaysian Insider.
Putrajaya cut fuel subsidies on October 2 by raising the price of RON95 petrol and diesel by 20 sen a litre.
  • A photo purportedly showing Krishnan was published on Facebook by the “Friends of BN – Barisan Nasional” page.
  • Krishnan was allegedly photographed during a protest against the fuel price hike outside Parliament on October 8. The protest was also against the goods and services tax (GST), which will come into effect in April next year.
  • Krishnan was criticised by social media users after the photograph was circulated online, especially on the Friends of Barisan Nasional Facebook page.
  • Munusamy said police had made several recommendations in their investigation papers but declined to elaborate further.
  • "The Attorney-General will made a decision on the case," Munusamy said.
This is not the first time an individual has gotten into trouble with a perceived insult of Najib or his likeness.
In December 2011, student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim was arrested by police for bringing down a flag bearing Najib's image outside the Umno headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Adam was later suspended for three semesters by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, where he was studying at that time.
