SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE WOULD DAMAGE BRITAIN DEFENSE

Scottish independence would damage “the very heart” of Britain’s maritime defence forces, the First Sea Lord has warned.
Writing for The Telegraph, Adml Sir George Zambellas says a “yes” vote in September’s referendum would “weaken” the effectiveness of the Royal Navy.
In the first intervention in the referendum debate by a serving military chief, Sir George says independence would harm “the security” of Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom.
Britain “would eventually adapt and cope”, he says, leaving Scotland to face the “deeper impact” of no longer having access to “one of the finest and most efficient navies in the world”.
The comments from a senior military figure will intensify pressure on Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister, who has in recent days faced growing criticism over defence issues.
