CHINESE NATIONALS INSULTED BY MALAYSIAN NAMEWEE'S VIDEO

Wee Meng Chee @ Namewee
KUALA LUMPUR - Chinese nationals in Malaysia are upset with a video clip by film-maker Wee Meng Chee, or Namewee, which they deem to be insulting to their country's badminton star Lin Dan.
The Malaysian Association of China Students Alumni said the video had greatly insulted their hero and the pride of China. The association oversees students from China who have studied and resided in Malaysia.
  • The ruckus came after Namewee uploaded his own video clip on YouTube, which contained abuses in Hokkien against Lin Dan after Datuk Lee Chong Wei lost 21-15, 10-21, 19-21 to the Chinese player in the men's singles badminton final of the London 2012 Olympics.
  • The four-and-a-half-minute-long video ultimately ended with Wee launching into a brief tirade against Lin Dan, saying that he would beat up the sportsman if he was in Malaysia.
  • Association president Huang Bin said Chong Wei had quite a number of fans in China, too, and they were as saddened as Malaysians by his loss to Lin Dan.
  • "But after watching Namewee's video, a lot of Chinese nationals in Malaysia were very angry because of this personal attack against Lin Dan," he said yesterday.
  • However, Huang said the video clip would not jeopardise 38 years of China-Malaysia relations.
  • "But Wee still has to take responsibility for his action, although he has issued an apology on Facebook, because he is a public figure," he added.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Chinese Association(MCA) Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said the video clip had ended up embarrassing Malaysians instead.
"Those in China will think that we are bad losers. Wee can be passionate, but don't go and scold other people with bad words," he added.
Chong Wei has issued an apology to his fans in China on his Weibo account.
