A new report says about 450 million children will be physically and mentally stunted over the next 15 years unless the world takes action to tackle malnutrition.The Save the Children warned in a report on Wednesday that chronic malnutrition is a largely hidden crisis that affects one in four children globally.
According to the report, 300 children die every hour of every day because of chronic malnutrition. That equals some 2 million deaths a year.
"The world has made dramatic progress in reducing child deaths, down from 12 to 7.6 million, but this momentum will stall if we fail to tackle malnutrition," the charity's head Justin Forsyth said. - The problem has become urgent due to volatile food prices, economic uncertainty, climate change and demographic shifts.
- The charity suggested that there were some straightforward remedies, including fortifying foods with vitamins and minerals and promoting breastfeeding.
Global hunger has fallen markedly over the last two decades, but the 2011 Global Hunger Index found that six countries have higher rates of hunger today than two decades ago. Five of those countries are in Africa. The other is North Korea. The 2011 Global Hunger Index said that Congo,
Burundi, Comoros, Swaziland and Ivory Coast have higher degrees of hunger today than in 1990. Kuwait, Turkey, Malaysia and Mexico have made the biggest gains against hunger.
