KABUL, Afghanistan - The war in Afghanistan has cost the US hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayers' money and has claimed the lives of many civilians in the Asian country. However, US Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker (right photo) has justified the skyrocketing costs of Washington's Afghan war by insisting that the military measure is cheaper than another 9/11 incident.
“I know people are tired of this war (in Afghanistan), but if we think the war is expensive-and it is-it is a lot cheaper than another 9/11,” Crocker said in an interview with US's National Public Radio.
Crocker claimed that Afghanistan is “where 9/11 came from,” adding that the Al-Qaeda has been cleared from the Asian country due to presence of US forces. - The United States and its Western allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to topple the Taliban regime, claiming the alleged attacks on twin towers in New York were carried out by the Al-Qaeda group the was supported by the Taliban.
This is while observers have raised doubts about the authenticity of accounts publicized by the US about the 9/11 incident by contending that the alleged attacks were part of a scenario conceived by Washington and without the involvement of any foreign rouge elements.
Recent video images leaked ahead of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 incident confirm eye-witness accounts that the attack on the Pentagon was made by a cruise missile rather than a passenger plane. The US has said that it will end the combat mission in Afghanistan by taking all troops by the end of 2014.
