VANCOUVER, Canada — A 39-year-old truck driver is serving an 18-month jail sentence for cyber-stalking a 16-year-old actress in a popular television series. It is the first case in British Columbia involving someone stalking a celebrity using social media.
David William Cholin pleaded guilty to criminally harassing the actress between 2006 and March 2010. Cholin was obsessed with the girl, who cannot be identified because a judge imposed a ban on the teen's name and the CBC TV series. Although Cholin had never met her, he claimed he was her "No. 1 fan" and created a fan website for her, without her approval.

- He sent her dozens of emails with sexual overtones, at one point threatening to kidnap her and have sex with her when she turned 16. He had to be escorted twice off the CBC premises.
- Even when contacted by police, Cholin admitted he was in love with the girl and had no intention of stopping his pursuit of her. His fixation began in 2004 when he saw the girl at North Shore Studios while he was dropping off a trailer.
