PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - Children born overseas to Malaysian women married to foreigners may be granted citizenship in the country.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the ministry was pushing the relevant government agencies to address this issue. "The time has come for the conferment of citizenship issue to be addressed immediately, to achieve gender equality," she said in a statement Thursday.
She said the ministry has requested the Home Ministry to look into amending the existing legislation.
Under current legislation, children born overseas to foreign women married to Malaysian men are granted citizenship.
