Prosecutors in the Philippines have charged a provincial governor and head of a powerful local clan in connection with last week's politically-linked massacre on the southern island of Mindanao.
Andal Ampatuan Sr (photo), governor of Maguindanao province, was charged in connection with the killings of at least 57 people, officials at the Philippines' national bureau of investigation said on Thursday. Seven other members of the Ampatuan family have also been charged with murder, robbery and damage to property in relation to the killings.

Earlier Maguindanao Philippine security forces on Thursday poured into the territory of a powerful clan accused of a massacre that left 57 people dead, arresting some of its gunmen and disarming others.
Authorities said they expected the alleged mastermind of Monday's slaughter to turn himself in by the end of the day, following intense pressure for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's government to take decisive action against the clan. However, indicating the situation in Maguindanao province.
