Footage supplied by pro-Tamil group website shows apparent civilian victims of government attack
Al Jazeera has received footage from a pro-Tamil group that says Sri Lankan government forces bombed a safe zone.
The group claims the images show the aftermath of a government raid in the country's northeast targeting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
But the claim cannot be independently verified.
David Hawkins, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Colombo, quoted officials as saying that the government stopped carrying out air attacks about a week ago, in order to protect civilians.

gh civilian casualties in the conflict have prompted international observers to speak out."I fear the reality is that significant numbers of people are still killed and injured every day in that pocket," John Holmes, the UN humanitarian chief said on Saturday.
Human Rights Watch said on Friday that up to 2,000 noncombatants had been killed and accused both sides of war crimes, calling on them to immediately stop "the ongoing slaughter of civilians".
Holmes, who met high-level government officials and visited displacement camps in Vavuniya in the northeast, said not enough food and other aid was reaching the civilians.
