Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden called for jihad over the Israeli offensive in Gaza in a new audio tape that appeared on Islamist websites today.The tape was dated in the current Islamic month.
His call came as Israeli aircraft struck a Gaza City cemetery today, pulverizing newly buried bodies, the military and witnesses said.
In Gaza City, where 500,000 are trapped, explosions and heavy machinegun fire echoed through the streets as Israeli tanks drew closer to its densely populated centre but did not enter.
One resident, Khader Mussa, 35, watched two apartment buildings burn as he huddled in a basement with his pregnant wife.
'The gates of Hell have opened,' he said. 'God help us.'
Despite the bombing campaign this morning, reports claimed Israel was holding back from its full on 'phase three' assault on the centre of Gaza as it believes 'shocked' Hamas leaders are ready to end the fighting.
Local newspapers claim Ismail Haniya, Hamas’s political leader in Gaza, looked 'frightened and despairing' during a speech on Monday.
The claims have led Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to pull back from a full-scale assault, although attacks on buildings are still happening and Israeli troops continue to swarm the area in the hopes of overwhelming Hamas and leading them to accept Egypt's ceasefire plan.
