UPROAR IN MALAYSIA’S PARLIAMENT OVER ‘AFTER MIDNIGHT’ DEBATES
Thursday, April 09, 2015
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - An Opposition MP questioned why
the Dewan Rakyat had to continue proceedings until the wee hours to
"bulldoze" Bills, calling it a "trend" that he has noticed
of late.
Gobind Singh Deo (DAP - Puchong) raised Standing Order 12(2)
on the Speaker having the power at any time to suspend the sitting for a stated
time.
Deo Singh brought this up at about 11.30pm on Wednesday during the
committee stage of the second reading of the Malaysian Aviation Commission Bill
2015."Why are we bulldozing the Bill? It is not even urgent. Speaker, you have the power to suspend the meeting," Gobind said to the thumps of approval from other Opposition MPs. This led to Tian Chua quipping, "About half of MPs here are asleep."
However, Deputy Speaker Datuk Ismail Mohamed Said told
Gobind that the Speaker had the discretion not to suspend the sitting.
A ruckus ensued, leading Ismail to repeatedly hit his mallet
to call for order in the House.
Tan Sri Annuar Musa (BN - Ketereh), however, argued that the
House had earlier approved a motion that the sitting would end after the
Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Amendment) Bill
2015 was passed.
"Why is this matter suddenly raised at this hour?
Haven't we decided on the motion earlier?" he asked.
Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (PSM - Sungai Siput) then
raised Standing Order 80A, claiming that holding the sitting late at night, was
amounting to insulting the Parliament.
"Where is the quality of debates after midnight? I feel
that those who decided to finish passing all six Bills tonight do not respect
the House," he said.
However, Ismail ruled that there was no breach of Standing
Order 80A and ordered for debates to continue.
N. Surendran (PKR - Padang Serai) also urged Minister in the
Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim to explain why the
sitting should proceed until the wee hours.
Shahidan later tabled a motion to "stop the clock"
to enable proceedings to continue past midnight.
Earlier, Opposition MPs pointed out a flaw in the wording of
the Bill with regards to translation.
Rafizi Ramli (PKR - Pandan) and G. Manivannan (PKR - Kapar)
argued that it would not be right to pass a flawed Bill.
However, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk
Seri Abdul Wahid Omar(photo) pointed out that the error was only in the English
version of the Bill."The Bahasa Malaysia version of the Bill is correct," he added.
The Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Aviation Commission Bill 2015 at 12.30am, Thursday, after an extended sitting overnight.

albums because he wanted “to keep the memories”, Jiji Press and other
media said.
Takashima, aged 64, told police he started paying for sex when he was
dispatched to a Japanese school in Manila in 1988, Jiji said.
Thereafter, the former middle-school principal had been on three sex
tours a year to the country, for a total of 65 visits, reports said.
During this time, he had sex with more than 12,000 women, who broadcaster NTV reported were aged between 14 and 70.
No report gave a breakdown of how long the tours were or how many
women he slept with on each one, however it averages out at more than
one a day every day of his life since his first visit.
Takashima told police that about 10 percent of the women were under 18 years old, Jiji said, citing unnamed police sources.
He was arrested for having sex with a girl in Manila last year
believed to be 13 or 14, under powers police have to prosecute certain
crimes committed abroad, Jiji said.

MEXICO GANG KILLS 15 POLICE IN WORST ATTACK IN YEARS
Wednesday, April 08, 2015
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Fifteen police officers were killed in a gang ambush in
western Mexico, an official said Tuesday, marking the deadliest day in
recent years for security forces battling the drug war.
Five more officers were wounded in Monday’s assault, which took place
on a twisting rural highway near the village of Soyatan as a convoy
carrying the elite state police unit headed to Guadalajara, Mexico’s
second biggest city.
Authorities suspect the powerful “Jalisco New Generation Drug Cartel”
carried out the assault against the officers after waiting for them in a
makeshift encampment for one or two days.
The assailants blocked the road with vehicles, pouring fuel on them
and setting the cars on fire, said Francisco Alejandro Solorio Arechiga,
Jalisco’s state security commissioner, who said a “large number” of
them attacked the officers.
“They died in a cowardly attack, which means that we can’t let our
guard down,” Solorio said after a meeting of federal police, military
and state security officials in Guadalajara, adding that the wounded
officers were in stable condition.
It was the heaviest single-day loss for Mexican security forces since
the start of President Enrique Pena Nieto’s two-year-old
administration.

GOVERNMENT LAWMAKERS DEFENDS MALAYSIAN PM’S LEADERSHIP FROM MAHATHIR PERSONAL ATTACKS
Tuesday, April 07, 2015
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - The Government Barisan Nasional lawmakers have
defended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's leadership from Tun Dr
Mahathir Mohamad's recent personal attacks.Barisan Nasional Back Benchers Club (BNBBC) chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad said that BN lawmakers were throwing their support behind Najib as his leadership had brought positive transformation.

Shahrir, who was accompanied by more 20 Barisan MPs, described the attacks against Najib as "personal and direct" and which had not been done openly.
Shahrir said he had asked Najib the reasons behind Dr Mahathir's attacks and had been told that the former prime minister was blowing hot and cold.
"I asked the Prime Minister what was going between
them. He said that Dr Mahathir was blowing hot and cold and that he (Najib) was
confused at this," Shahrir said at BNBBC lounge on Monday. He added that Barisan lawmakers had decided to voice their support for Najib as they were "satisfied and happy" at the transformation in Parliament where even Barisan MPs could voice their views if they did agree with the Government.
Shahrir expressed confidence that Najib would answer the allegations against him in his own time.
Dr Mahathir had upped his criticism claiming that BN could
lose the 14th general election if Najib remained as prime minister.
He had cited the poor handling of issues such as 1MDB and
the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu among his reasons.

SALES OF BOOKS ON ISLAM ROCKET AFTER FRANCE ATTACKS
Monday, April 06, 2015
Books on Islam are selling out in France after deadly extremist
attacks in the capital raised uncomfortable questions about Europe’s
fastest-growing religion.
A special magazine supplement focused on the Quran has flown off the
shelves, and shops are selling more books on Islam than ever after the
Paris attacks in January that left 17 dead.
“The French are asking more and more questions, and they feel less
satisfied than ever by the answers they’re getting from the media,” said
Fabrice Gerschel, director of Philosophie magazine, which published the
supplement.
Sales of books on Islam were three times higher in the first quarter
of 2015 than this time last year, according to the French National Union
of Bookshops.
The jihadist attacks against the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine and a
Jewish supermarket have left many non-Muslims looking for answers. Others want to see past extremist interpretations of Islam.
French academics too are becoming more curious, with a chair in the
study of the Quran inaugurated on Thursday at the prestigious College de
France in Paris.
Jean Rony, who teaches at the nearby Sorbonne university, began studying the Muslim holy book for himself this year.
Mansour Mansour, who runs the Al Bouraq publishing house specialising
on Islam and the Middle East, said his sales have shot up by 30%.
“The same happened after the September 11 attacks in 2001,” he told AFP.

SHOCK, DEFIANCE IN KENYA AFTER SHEBAB MASSACRE 148 AT UNIVERSITY
Monday, April 06, 2015
GARISSA, Kenya – The bodies of the 148 students and
security officers massacred by Somalia’s Shebab Islamists in a Kenyan
university were flown Friday to Nairobi where their desperate and
grieving loved ones were waiting.
The day-long siege of Garissa University was Kenya’s deadliest attack
since the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, and the
bloodiest
ever by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants.
bloodiest
ever by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants.
Amid international revulsion at the attack, US President Barack Obama
called Kenyan leader Uhuru Kenyatta and vowed to stand “hand-in-hand”
with his government and the Kenyan people.
- Pope Francis condemned the massacre as an act of “senseless brutality.”
- Survivors recounted how the masked gunmen taunted students before killing them at the campus near the Somali border.
- Many were forced to phone their parents to urge them to call for Kenyan troops to leave Somalia — before shooting them anyway.
- As the gunmen prowled the corridors hunting down more people to kill, some students smeared blood from their dead friends over their bodies to pretend they too had been shot.
“There were bodies everywhere in execution lines, we saw people whose
heads had been blown off, bullet wounds everywhere, it was a grisly
mess,” said Reuben Nyaora, an aid worker who helped the wounded. Others appeared to have been killed by knives.
The day-long siege ended with four gunmen killed in a hail of gunfire, and one suspect reportedly arrested.
At least 79 people were also wounded in the attack on the campus, which lies near the border with Somalia.

10 FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN MARRIAGE DISPUTE
Monday, April 06, 2015
PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A man in Pakistan, angered by a rejected marriage proposal to his cousin, has killed 10 members of his extended family after years earlier killing four others over it.
Police officer Shahid Khan says the attack happened early Sunday in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in its mountainous northwest.
Khan says Gul Ahmed, the man suspected of carrying out the attack, is still on the run after shooting dead his uncle, aunt and eight cousins — including Naveeda Bibi, who he wanted to marry.
In November 2014, Khan says Ahmed also shot dead his parents and two brothers over wanting to marry her. He was never arrested by police for the earlier killings.
Violence over rejected proposals occasionally strikes Pakistan.
