AT LEAST 56 KILLED AS RUSSIAN TRAWLER SINKS IN THE ICY SEAS

Friday, April 03, 2015
MOSCOW - A Russian trawler sank in icy seas off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Thursday, killing at least 56 of the 132 crew, the emergencies ministry said on Thursday.
63 people were rescued but 13 were still unaccounted for, hours after the Dalniy Vostok fishing vessel sank in the Sea of Okhotsk so quickly that its captain, who drowned, did not manage to send a distress signal.
  • It was not immediately clear why the 26-year-old ship had sunk but a local official said the crew may have violated safety rules by overloading it, affecting its balance.
  • Russia has a long history of road, air and sea disasters, many caused by negligence or violation of safety regulations.
  • "At this time we do not know what might have caused the tragedy," Viktor Klepikov, coordinating captain of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky maritime rescue coordination centre conducting the search, told Reuters by telephone.
Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov(photo) said more than 10 possible causes were being considered by investigators.
But the acting governor of Sakhalin island, Oleg Kozhemyako, told LifeNews television: "Given the fact that the tragedy occurred quickly and unexpectedly, and the ship was registered and met all technical requirements, I think there was a violation of rules when it comes to overload and balancing of the vessel."

BRAZILIAN PRIEST SUSPENDED FOR NUDE SELFIE

Thursday, April 02, 2015
RIO DE JANEIRO – A Brazilian priest known for conservative views on moral issues and disapproving in his sermons of kissing and sex has been suspended for sending a nude selfie to an apparent mistress on his cell phone.
“Father Alfredo Rosa Borges has been suspended from his duties,” and faces ex-communication, a diocesan spokesman at Campos de Goytacazes, a northern town in Rio statetold AFP on Tuesday.
Borges is seen posing naked in front of a mirror holding his cell phone in pictures posted last week via smartphone service Whatsapp which have since appeared in online media.
Rio daily O Dia reported he had admitted sending suggestive messages to a woman who later posted them but denied having an intimate relationship with her.
“An investigation has been opened but the photo comprises a transgression for the Church,” the bishop of Campos, Roberto Francisco(photo), told O Dia.
Worshippers at Borges’ Santo Antonio church reported he had first insisted the picture was fake but then conceded it was him and explained that “we are all sinners.”
Borges authors a blog where he expresses conservative views on social issues, dubbing kissing a “grave sin” and sexual liaisons as a “serious moral disorder as normally it leaves aside and abandons the procreative aspect.”

MALAYSIA FLOODED WITH MORE THAN 400 CALLS ON THE FIRST DAY GST TAKING EFFECT?

Thursday, April 02, 2015
PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Flooded with more than 400 calls on the first day of the goods and services tax (GST) taking effect, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry said today that the majority concerned the price increase in prepaid phone cards.
The ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Alias Ahmad said a total of 419 calls were made to the government’s GST hotline, adding that 118 of those callers complained about the telecommunications companies under the anti-profiteering law.
“The most popular complaint, 33 per cent was about prepaid top-ups,” he told reporters at the Finance Ministry here during a joint press conference with Customs GST director Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy.
The second-highest number of calls to the hotline at 24 per cent were complaints about the prices of cigarettes, mineral water and foodstuff like chicken, squid and sugar, he said.
Subromaniam clarified that prepaid phone card prices previously had the six per cent sales tax (SST) embedded.
He added that with the GST replacing the old tax, the prices for the top-up phone cards should not change.
Alias said out of the seven notices issued to traders today, four were regarding the sale of prepaid phone cards.
They were given three days to provide an explanation, he added.
Under the Anti-Profiteering Act 2010, individuals convicted can be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced three years’ jail, or both, while companies can be fined up to RM500,000 for the first offence and RM1 million
for subsequent offences.

THAI MAN JAILED 25 YEARS OVER INSULTING TO THAILAND’S MONARCY IN FACEBOOK POST

Wednesday, April 01, 2015
A Thai military court on Tuesday jailed a man for 25 years for posting pictures on his Facebook page deemed insulting to Thailand’s monarchy, in one of the toughest such sentences in recent times.
Thailand’s lese-majeste law is the world’s harshest and makes it a crime to defame, insult or threaten the king, queen or heir to the throne or regent.
Since taking power in a May coup, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a staunch royalist, has repeatedly vowed to vigorously pursue royal insult cases and try those perceived to be anti-monarchists.
In the latest case, Tiensutham Suttijitseranee, a 58-year-old businessman, was found guilty of posting defamatory content in a closed-door court sentencing, his lawyer told Reuters.
The court did not allow his relatives and reporters to attend the verdict, she said.
Since the coup, all lese-majeste cases have been tried by military tribunals.

IN LESS THAN 2 MONTHS SECOND BLOGGER HACKED TO DEATH IN BANGLADESH

Wednesday, April 01, 2015
DHAKA - A Bangladeshi blogger was hacked to death in Dhaka on Monday, the second such attack on a critic of religious fundamentalism in the mainly Muslim country in less than two months.

Three knife-wielding attackers set upon 27-year-old Washiqur Rahman near his home on Monday morning, weeks after the murder of an American atheist blogger in Dhaka triggered international outrage.

Police said they had arrested two suspects at the scene and retrieved three knives, but a third escaped. Deputy commissioner Wahidul Islam said Rahman had been "brutally hacked to death".

"They hacked him in his head and neck with big knives and once he fell on the ground they then hacked his body," he said.

Rahman's blog did not appear to focus on religious issues, although fellow writers said he opposed religious fundamentalism.

  • Police said he used a Facebook page under the name Washiqur Babu to post articles written by other writers that appeared to mock fundamentalist Islamic views.
  • Deputy police commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker told AFP the motive for the killing appeared to be "ideological" differences with fundamentalist groups in Bangladesh.
  • "So far what we've gathered after primary interrogation of the two suspects is that they killed him him because he criticised hardline Islamists," he said.

The two suspects in custody are aged about 20 and are both students of madrassas or Islamic schools, Islam said.

The killing bears strong similarities to the murder of Avijit Roy, an American blogger of Bangladeshi origin who was hacked to death with machetes in Dhaka last month.

His death sparked uproar, with hundreds of secular activists holding protests for days to demand justice.
