ANGRY MOB LYANCHES RAPE ACCUSED IN INDIA
NEW DELHI, India - A rape suspect was pulled out of a jail
and lynched by a mob in northeastern India on Thursday, local reports
said, with anger raging over the high rate of sexual violence in the
country.
The man, who stood accused of raping a woman multiple times and was
arrested on February 24, was dragged out of the prison in Nagaland state
before being beaten to death and strung up, according to media reports.
“A mass protest rally against the rape was held at Dimapur
(Nagaland’s main commercial town) this morning after which students and
angry people forced into the district jail and managed to pull out the
accused,” the Press Trust of India news agency said.
Another report said that the crowd started marching towards the jail from a location almost seven kilometres (four miles) away.
The Hindustan Times newspaper said the crowd “tore down two gates and
took custody” of the suspect, before dragging him to the town’s
landmark clock tower.
The suspect was then stripped naked, beaten and his body was strung up to the tower, the newspaper said.
“The situation is very tense,” town police superintendent Meren Jamir told the Hindustan Times.
The incident, which sparked outrage both within India and around the
world, highlighted the frightening level of violence against women in
the world’s second most populous country.
The Indian government has also asked video-sharing website YouTube to
block access to the documentary, claiming that its broadcast violated
certain key agreements with the filmmaker.

NUMBER OF INDIAN DELHI RAPES REPORTED INCREASE BY ONE THIRD IN 2014
NEW DELHI, India - The number of rapes reported in New Delhi
increased by nearly a third in the last year, police said on Friday, highlighting
the alarming levels of sexual violence against women in the Indian capital.
At an annual briefing with reporters, Delhi Police
Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi said that a total of 2,069 rape cases were
reported in New Delhi in the 12 months leading up to December 15, against 1,571
reported the previous year, an increase of 31.6 per cent.
The city sealed its reputation as India’s “rape capital” two
years ago when a medical student died after being gang-raped on a moving bus,
prompting mass protests and triggering a series of policing and legal reforms.
The figures were released the same day that an Uber taxi
driver accused of raping a female passenger in Delhi last month made his second
appearance in court.
Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, was remanded in custody for another
three days over the alleged December 5 attack.
But the police commissioner insisted the new figures did not
necessarily indicate that the city was becoming more dangerous for women but
rather highlighted a growing willingness of victims to come forward.
Bassi said that police received another 36,284 complaints on
other issues at women’s help desks in the city’s police stations, which have
mostly been established in the recent years.
The policemen are supposed to protect the women from the rapists, however last Thursday, the two constables allegedly abducted the girl from her
village, according to a complaint filed by the girl’s mother.
Two policemen are accused of raping a 14-year-old girl were
on the run on Friday, a police official said.
“She said the men took her daughter to the police station in
a car and raped her in a room in the station premises,” Superintendent Lallan
Singh said.
“The two men are absconding and a search is on for them,"
They have been suspended and if found guilty will be punished
according to the law,” Singh said.
The incident happend in the town of Musajhag, Badaun district,
in Uttar Pradesh state.

MEDICAL STUDENT GANG-RAPED IN MANIPAL INDIA
MANIPAL, India - A 22-year-old medical student was allegedly abducted and
gang-raped by three people when she was on way to her flat from the
college library late Thursday, a police official said Friday.
“We have registered a criminal case against unidentified people and
have made some headway in the investigation on the basis of the
information the victim gave in her complaint and after questioning one
of the college security guards,” Udupi Superintendent of Police MB
Boralingaiah said.
- The incident occurred when the victim, a fourth-year student of the Kasturba Medical College, was waiting to hire an auto outside the Manipal University campus gate to return to her flat from the library around 11.30pm.
- “The victim said in the complaint that she was abducted by the accused, driven to an isolated spot and gang-raped after midnight. Though she managed to reach her flat later, she gave the complaint early Friday,” Boralingaiah said.
- The victim’s family, who lives in the neighbouring state of Kerala, have been informed about the incident. She is currently recovering from injuries on her hands and neck.
- Meanwhile, amid allegations of rape, two minor girls were found dead and a third is battling for her life in West Bengal, police said Friday, but they ruled out the possibility of sexual offence in two cases.
- A student who had checked into a hotel in Nadia district’s Mayapur died Thursday of excessive bleeding. Following her death, the family lodged a complaint of rape. Police however ruled it out.
- According to police, the 17-year-old girl, a resident of Kalna in Burdwan district had come to Mayapur Wednesday with three male friends without informing her parents. On Thursday morning, she was taken to Krishnagar Sadar Hospital in Nadia district by her friends where doctors declared her dead.
In another incident in North 24-Parganas, a 12-year-old girl was found
strangulated to death Thursday in her house with her clothes torn apart,
prompting her family to suspect rape.
In yet another incident in Gaighata again in the district, an
eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped and now is battling for life in a
city hospital with critical injuries.

the incidents of sexual violence and the “insensitive” reactions of the
Trinamool Congress regime of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A number of rape victims and their families from various corners of the state also took part.
- The gang-rape and murder of a college girl from Kamduni village in North 24-Parganas district June 7 acted as the trigger for the mammoth rally.
- Chief Minister Banerjee visited the village Monday, but ended up shouting at women protesting against the incident and seeking to talk to her. An enraged Banerjee screamed “shut up” at the women and called them Maoists and CPI-M activists, drawing flak from the civil society, media and the opposition.
