THE ONLY COUNTRY ISIS FEARS IS ISRAEL?

The United States and Russia may be hitting ISIS harder than anyone, with constant attacks from the air, but Israel is the only country the Islamic State group truly fears, according to a German reporter who spent 10 days with the organization in Iraq and Syria.
“The only country ISIS fears is Israel," Jürgen Todenhöfer, 75, who visited the territory under the control of ISIS accompanied by his son, told British online news site Jewish News. "They told me they know the Israeli army is too strong for them.”
Todenhöfer, a former member of the German Parliament from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, made his trip in 2014, writing a book that was published this year: "My 10 Days in the Islamic State." 
He was the first Western journalist allowed extensive access to ISIS territory - and to return safely from the trip.
“They think they can defeat U.S. and U.K. ground troops, who they say they have no experience in city guerrilla or terrorist strategies. But they know the Israelis are very tough as far as fighting  against  guerrillas  and 
terrorists,” Todenhöfer said.
  • "They are not scared of the British and the Americans, they are scared of the Israelis and told me the Israeli army is the real danger. We can’t defeat them with our current strategy. These people [the IDF] can fight a guerrilla war," he said in the report.
  • Todenhöfer described the stages of ISIS' plan for world domination: First to conquer all the Middle E The terrorist group, says Todenhöfer, would love to tie down American and British ground forces in a protracted urban war. "In Mosul there are 10,000 fighters living among 1.5 million people in 2,000 apartments, not in one place - so it would be difficult to fight them. ISIS fighters are ready to die in a war against western soldiers," he said.
On Saturday, ISIS released a voice recording  of what it says is its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi threatening that Islamic State militants would attack Israel. 
"With the help of Allah, We are getting closer to you every day," al-Baghdadi told his Israeli listeners. 
"The Israelis will soon see us in Palestine. This is no longer a war of the crusaders against us. The entire world is fighting us right now."

ISIS BEHEADS PROMINENT SYRIAN ARCHEOLOGIST IN SYRIAN PALMYRA

Militants from Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) beheaded one of Syria's most prominent antiquities scholars in the ancient town of Palmyra, then hung his body from one of the town's Roman columns, Syrian state media and an activist group said Wednesday.
The killing of 81-year-old Khaled al-Asaad was the latest atrocity perpetrated by the militant group, which has captured a third of both Syria and neighbouring Iraq and declared a self-styled "caliphate" on the territory it controls.
Since ISIS overran Palmyra in May, there have been fears the extremists, who have destroyed famed archeological sites in Iraq, would demolish the 2,000-year-old Roman-era city at the edge of the town — a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the Mideast's most spectacular archeological sites.
According to Syrian state news agency SANA and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, al-Assad was beheaded on Tuesday in a square outside the town's museum. 
The Observatory, which has a network of activists on the ground in Syria, said dozens of people gathered to witness the killing. Al-Asaad had been held by the ISIS for about a month, it added.

3 SUSPECTED MALAYSIAN MILITANTS HEADING TO SYRIA, DETAINED

KUALA LUMPUR - An architect, a technician and a shopkeeper became the latest Malaysians to be detained as suspected militants just as the country made its firmest stand against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), designating it as a "terrorist organisation".
The three were about to board a flight to Turkey from where they would have found their way into Syria to join the ISIS.
But they were detained at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport by members of the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division at about 8.55am on Thursday.
On the same day, the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution calling on countries to help stem the flow of foreign militants to Iraq and Syria.
  • Police said the architect was from Pahang and the technician from Perlis, and both are aged 26. The 42-year-old sundry shop owner is from Kelantan and is believed to be married with six children.
  • "Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were planning to board a flight to Istanbul, which transited in Doha," said Senior Asst Comm (SAC) Datuk Ayob Khan, principal assistant director of the Counter Terrorism Division.
  • "From Turkey, these men were planning to book a passage into Syria where they would join the Islamic State terror group."
  • He said that prior to the arrests, the police raided the homes of the suspects without their knowledge and discovered, among other evidence, an ISIS flag.
  • The arrests raise the number of Malaysian militants held by the Counter Terrorism Division to 22 in the country since April 28.
  • Police are now on the hunt for five militants believed to be linked to ISIS and the Abu Sayyaf, a terror group based in the Philippines.
  • Former lecturer Mahmud Ahmad (also known as Abu Handzalah) and another sundry shop owner, Mohd Najib Husen, both 36, are believed to be leaders of a local militant group that is training and sending members to fight in Syria and Iraq.
  • Sources said the authorities believed that the two men recruited and arranged for four Malaysians to be sent to Syria on March 5 this year, including Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, the first Malaysian suicide bomber.
The third member being sought is former Selayang Municipal Council employee Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee, 39, also known as Abu Nur.
The two other wanted men are Darul Islam Sabah members Mohd Amin Baco, 31, and Jeknal Adil, 30, both from Tawau.
Sources revealed that both men had undergone training with the Abu Sayyaf in southern Philippines since 2005.

WHY AN ANTI-ISIS COALITION COULD BE A PROBLEM

One of the major challenges for western countries is how to stop ISIS without abetting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad(photo), whose forces have also been fighting ISIS.
Western governments believe Assad's anti-democratic policies are not only responsible for the deaths of over 200,000 people in the Syrian civil war but for giving rise to jihadist groups such as ISIS.
The involvement of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar in the anti-ISIS coalition is "a major departure from past policies," says Houchang Hassan-Yari, a professor at the Royal Military College of Canada.
He says these countries have had a dubious relationship with jihadi groups in the region. During the Syrian uprising, private citizens in these Sunni nations funnelled financial and military support to anti-Assad rebels, including ISIS.
But Hassan-Yari says the progress and rhetoric of ISIS has sent a signal to neighbouring countries that the group is not simply a local threat, but one that could imperil their own governments.
The problem is that a number of Iraq and Syria's other neighbours aren't nearly as motivated to step up the fight, says Wayne White, a scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C.
  • He says Turkey, as a NATO ally, "should be sending 75,000 troops to the [Turkey-Syrian] border to completely seal all of the border adjacent to ISIS, to cut the oil shipments, to cut the fighters going in. But we haven't even received that from the Turks."
  • Despite being "so critical" in this battle, Turkey is reticent of blowback from attacking ISIS directly or doing anything that would benefit Assad's regime, says White.
  • White says that while the kingdom of Jordan has a relatively small military, as a result of a long friendship with erstwhile Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, the country still has deep ties with Iraq's former military officer corps, as well as various tribes, and could be key in gathering intelligence about ISIS's strategy.
  • "Jordan is an important actor, but it's also the most vulnerable," White says, citing the fact that Jordan now has camps of refugees from the Syrian war that rival the country's biggest cities in terms of population.
Brynen says that next to the U.S., the biggest player in this situation is Iran. The Shia-majority country has been a major backer of the Shia-led government in Iraq, and has been training and equipping Iraqi forces, as well reinforcing Shia militias throughout the country in an attempt to neutralize ISIS.
But there is significant controversy about Iran's involvement in a broader coalition.
Due to its long-standing feud with the U.S., Iran rebuffed an invitation to the Paris talks and ruled out any harmonized anti-ISIS military effort with the U.S.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry countered by saying, "We are not co-ordinating with Iran. Period."

OBAMA ADMITS US DON'T HAVE A STRATEGY ON ISIS IN SYRIA??

WASHINGTON — President Obama admitted Thursday that “we don’t have a strategy yet” for dealing with Islamic State, the terrorists who have rampaged across Iraq and Syria and seized Iraq’s second-largest city nearly three months ago. 
Obama made the admission when asked at a news conference whether he would seek Congress’ authorization to go after the group in Syria, where he said it has a “safe haven.”
“I don’t want to put the cart before the horse,” he said. “We don’t have a strategy yet. As our strategy develops, we will consult with Congress.”
The US has already begun “limited” airstrikes against Islamic State in Iraq to protect minority groups, bolster Kurdish forces and safeguard US personnel in the north of the war-ravaged country.
But with militants controlling huge swaths of territory, executing prisoners and imposing a brutal brand of Islam, there are increasing calls to also hit the group in Syria.
  • Obama appeared to keep the door open to doing that even without authorization of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, who he charged lacked “legitimacy” after using brutal tactics against his own citizens.
  • Assad’s government has warned that such strikes would be considered an act of “aggression.”
  • “We need to make sure that we’ve got clear plans,” Obama said.
  • “Clearly, ISIL has come to represent the very worst elements in the region that we have to deal with collectively,” he added, using another name for Islamic State.
  • The US is reaching out to coalition partners who could contribute to any stepped-up efforts.
  • “We are going to work politically and diplomatically with folks in the region,” Obama said. “And we’re going to cobble together the kind of coalition that we need for a long-term strategy as soon as we are able to fit together the military, political and economic components of that strategy.”
Earlier Thursday, it was reported that members of the group had water-boarded American journalist James Foley, who was executed in a video.
“Yes, that is part of the information that bubbled up, and Jim was subject to it,” a person familiar with his captivity told The Washington Post. “I believe he suffered a lot of physical abuse.”
The US waterboarded detainees in CIA facilities after the 9/11 attacks. Obama has called the interrogation technique a form of torture.

HUNDREDS CANADIAN CALGARY MUSLIMS PROTEST ISIS VIOLENCE IN IRAQ

 CALGARY, Alberta, Canada - Violence in Iraq prompted hundreds of Sunni and Shia Muslims in Calgary to stand together in protest of ISIS( Islamic state across Sunni areas of Iraq and in Syria). 
About 200 people gathered outside Calgary City Hall Saturday, many carrying signs opposing the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Over the past few weeks ISIS militants have taken control of multiple northern Iraqi cities and also launched an attack on the country' largest oil refinery. 
"We are gathered here today to protest any form of terrorism which is happening around the globe, especially in Iraq," said Riyaz Khawaja, who is president of the Hussaini Association of Calgary, which represents Shia Muslims. 
"We gather here to raise our voices and let the Canadian government know that they should be vigilant about what's happening inside of Canada." 
  • Over the past few months, CBC News has uncovered exclusive details about several young Calgary men moving overseas to fight as jihadists in Syria and Iraq. 
  • No one knows for sure how many men from Calgary, or Canada as a whole, have left to wage jihad. 
  • However, Canadian Security Intelligence Service director Michel Coulombe testified before the Senate national security and defence committee that an estimated 130 Canadians have gone abroad to join terror groups in Syria, Yemen, Somalia and North Africa. 
  • He estimated about 30 of those people had left to fight in the Syria-Iraq area. 
  • "There are radicals in this country and they are brainwashing our youth and taking their steps toward terrorism, which is against Islam itself, said Khawaja.
Khawaja says he and other community leaders are working hard to help youth understand they should not listen to radicals. 
Calgary police also say they are watching radicalization in the city but have not spoken about what is being done to tackle religious extremism at home.
