ARGENTINA CALLS ON UNSC TO ORDER END OF HOSTILITIES IN GAZA

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

NEW YORK, UN - In a press conference from the Government House, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman (right photo) read a letter written by President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in which she urges the UN Security Council “to order the immediate end of hostilities” to Gaza.
In a personal letter addressed to the head of the UN Security Council, Hardeep Singh Puri, Fernández de Kirchner (right photo) urges him to “urgently call for the Council to convene in order to put an end to this round of violence that strengthens those who wish to impede the creation of a Palestine state that can peacefully coexist with Israel, as the president of the Palestine Nationals Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, promised he would do.”
She adds that “we will always work in order to avoid armed conflicts and support peaceful solutions, as well as the defence of the human life over geopolitical and economic interests. This situation, however, cannot wait.”
However, the United States has blocked a U.N. Security Council call for an immediate cease-fire in Israel’s weeklong offensive in Gaza against Hamas.
The draft press statement failed to address the root cause of the current escalation – the continuing barrage of rocket attacks from Gaza against Israel, the spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the U.N., Erin Pelton, said in a statement.

RAPE VICTIMS STRUGGLE WITH LEGAL ABORTIONS IN ARGENTINA

Saturday, October 13, 2012

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Rape victims have a right to abortion under Argentine law, but the nation's Supreme Court was forced to intervene this week to ensure that a woman who says she was kidnapped, forced into prostitution and raped could end her pregnancy.

The case has divided the public and sparked lawsuits in Buenos Aires, one of Latin America's most socially liberal cities where the mayor and opposition lawmakers are fighting over what limits if any should be placed on the procedure.

Abortion is banned in much of Latin America, home to about half the world's Roman Catholics. Argentina is among the countries that allow abortions in cases of rape or when a woman's health is in danger.

The recent controversy began when Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri(above left photo) announced that the city's first legal abortion under a new regulation governing the procedure in rape cases would be carried out on Tuesday. But a civil court judge blocked the abortion at the last minute at the request of a private group.

Anti-abortion activists identified the woman and protested outside her home last week and then again at the hospital where she was to have the abortion. The woman's lawyer, Pablo Vicente, said the hospital chaplain was among the protesters.
